Santiago de Compostela é o ponto de encontro de milhares de pessoas, quase 180 mil em 2011, que por diversos motivos peregrinam até o local sagrado todos os anos, seja caminhando, à cavalo ou de bicicleta. São diversas motivações para tal, assim como também são diversos os caminhos que chegam de todas as partes da Europa – como você pode ver na imagem abaixo.

Embora os caminhos sejam muitos, o preferido é o caminho francês, que se inicia no noroeste da França, onde ocorre o encontro de outras 4 rotas principais que se estendem ao oriente da Europa. Por todo o caminho, você pode observar construções seculares e lugares remotos que com certeza ampliam o encantamento e o grau de introspecção que mergulham seus peregrinos.

No Brasil, cerca de 2 mil pessoas partem para esta jornada todo ano. Devido ao grande volume de pessoas em busca de reflexão, turismo ou aventura, criou-se a Associação de Confrades Amigos do Caminho de Santiago de Compostela, uma entidade de visa guiar quem deseja fazer o caminho, dando suporte ao planejamento da viagem.

No caminho da história

A famosa Santiago de Compostela na Galícia, Espanha, abriga desde o ano 862 os restos mortais do apóstolo Tiago, que logo após a terceira aparição de Jesus Cristo, saiu em uma grande jornada para levar o cristianismo às terras mais longínquas quanto possível.

Foi assim que Tiago chegou à Finisterrae, que significa “fim da terra” o extremo ocidente da Espanha onde pregou por 6 anos para então voltar à Palestina e posteriormente à  Jerusalém, onde foi morto em no ano 44. Dois discípulos convertidos levaram seu corpo já embalsamado para a Hispania, onde foi sepultado em um bosque e velado por eremitas.

Quase setecentos anos depois, dois camponeses avistaram luzes neste bosque. O Bispo Teodomiro então partiu para o local onde encontrou o eremita, todo envolto em luz, que velava o sepulcro do apóstolo. Tão breve a história chegou ao então Rei Afonso II, ele ordenou a construção de uma capela e um monastério, tornando-se o primeiro peregrino a visitar o local. Daí nasceu o antigo Caminho de Campo Estela.

Em 845 começaram a chegar os primeiros peregrinos, mas já em 862, o local não comportava o fluxo de fiéis. Foi aí que transladaram os restos mortais para Santiago de Compostela. Quase 200 anos depois, em 1075, iniciou-se a construção da atual catedral.
