The 2017 Optimist European Championships officially opened last evening in Bourgas, Bulgaria.
The parade of nations to the town square was one of the highlights of the evening accompanied by the Commodore Malen Chubenkov Navy marching band. Speeches in two languages from local authoriities, in particular the Minister of Sport of Bulgaria, Krasen Kralev, welcomed the 262 sailors from 44 countries to the port of Bourgas.
Two sailors from the Bulgarian Optimist Team read the Competitors Oath and two members of the Jury read the Officials Oath.
Following the official opening of the championship by the Major of Bougas, Dimitar Nikolov, traditional Bulgarian dancers as well as a younger troup of dancers in colourful costumes topped off the entertainment to an appreciative crowd of sailors, friends & families.
The final touch to the ceremonies saw the release of a dozen or so white pigeons symbolizing peace, love and honour.
