A 26-year-old man died on Saturday (15) after being hit by a shark while swimming at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Massachusetts, USA. The Wellfleet Police Department, which is working on the case, said in a statement that the victim was taken to Cape Cod Hospital within hours of the attack but could not resist the injuries.
The victim is the 26-year-old Arthur Medici, who lived in the United States four years ago and worked as a pizza delivery man.It was the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts since 1936. The type of shark involved was not immediately known. Great white sharks, apex predators, inhabit the waters off the Cape.
On 15 August, the state saw its first attack since 2012 when a New York man was severely injured off Truro, also on Cape Cod.On Saturday, with sunny skies and warm temperatures, Newcomb Hollow Beach was busy, even though summer season was over and lifeguards were not on watch.
Joe Booth, a local fisherman and surfer, said he saw the man and his friend boogie boarding when the attack happened. He said he saw the man aggressively kick something behind him and a flicker of a tail from the water. He realized what was happening when the friend came ashore dragging his injured friend.
the Brazilian consulate in Boston, in the United States, says that it is aware of the case and is in contact with the victim’s family.According to local police, the city’s beaches are closed for swimming in the next 24 hours for an investigation to be carried out.”More information will be released by the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” the police statement said.
“Shark attacks do not happen so often, there has only been a recent increase in incidents. There are more sharks because of the large concentration of humans and seals that are the main source of food for large white sharks.” Hargrove also said there were two recent attacks, the last time was in 2012.
According to local police, the city’s beaches are closed for swimming in the next 24 hours for an investigation to be carried out.
He practiced a body board when he was attacked by the shark in his legs, came alive in the hospital, but could not resist. The death occurred around 12 o’clock in Boston (13h of Brasília), last Saturday (15). He was the first fatal victim of shark attack in 80 years in the state.
To bring the body to Brazil, the family made a “kitty online”. One day, 539 people donated and raised more than US $ 29,000 (approximately US $ 120,000), hitting the stipulated goal of US $ 25,000.
According to a recent survey of the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) of the Florida Museum in the United States in 2017, there were 53 incidents reported of alleged attacks in the country, which represents a slight decline from the number of 56 cases of the year previous. Despite this, there were no fatal incidents in 2017. The research divides incidents with sharks into two categories:
Triggered Attacks: These are incidents caused when a diver, for example, is bitten while interacting with an animal in its natural habitat.
Unprovoked attacks: are incidents that occurred in the natural habitat of fish and without the provocation by the person attacked.
In the United States, Florida has the highest reported number of ‘unprovoked’ shark attacks, with 31, this number representing 58% of the total in the country. Second, with 10 cases in the state of South Carolina, and in third place is Hawaii with 06 cases reported.
Still according to the survey, the US is at the top of the list of countries with the highest rate of shark attacks, accounting for 60% of global incidents.
The organization believes that the reason for the increase in shark attacks is related to an increase in human population as well as an increase in interest in water sports. By 2017, 59% of the world’s attacks occurred while the victim was involved in some aquatic activity.
